Summer 2023 Songs: the hit singles. Here’s the music of summer 2023

The’summer 2023 It’s here, and in the world of music, that can only mean one thing: the summer hits. As happens every year, all (or almost all) artists release their singles for dancing and listening to under a beach umbrella; but only a few manage to create a real hit – a “summer anthem”, in short – the track destined to be played on heavy rotation in the local and in the celebrations, including those bearing the DJ4.

But What are the summer hits of 2023?? Let’s find out which tracks are defining this season. Let’s start with the Italian hits.

We’ve already given you a sneak preview of some of them in the’article which we wrote in the spring, in which we predicted a few tracks, including the one that is, for now, the undisputed number one: “Italodisco“. Packed with references to the 1980s, from the “Made in Italy” band” The Kolors (with Stash always fronting the band), “Italo Disco” is a tribute to the genre that, 40 years ago now, made our country a world leader in electronic music (there are clear references in the lyrics – and in the music – to Giorgio Moroder and to the  Righeira).

“Disco Paradise” by Fedez, Annalisa and Articolo 31: A project featuring three artists who, even when performing as “solo acts”, never put a foot wrong (in particular, the echoes of Annalisa’s *Mon Amour* are still ringing in our ears). And this year, “Disco Paradise” has really hit the mark, with an explosion of summery sounds inspired by the past (in this case, the inspiration draws mainly on the 1970s). As of mid-August 2023, it is the song with the highest number of views on YouTube: a staggering 11 million.

“Lambada” by Boomdabash e Paola & Chiara: Paola & Chiara have returned to the limelight in the wake of the 2023 Sanremo Festival, and Boomdabash have decided to feature the two sisters from Milan on their summer hit, which is doing really well. It’s worth noting that Paola & Chiara have also released their single “Mare Caos” this summer: it’s doing well, though perhaps not quite as well as expected.

“Steal the night from me“ by I Pinguini Tattici Nucleari: I Pinguini Tattici Nucleari continue to churn out hits, and this summer they’re releasing “Rubami la notte”. The song celebrates the nightlife and the new love stories that blossom in this setting: a very topical subject, especially amongst young people enjoying their holidays…. A song that… people are happy to sing along to, judging by the feedback we get when we perform it at events.

Two more tracks that are among the summer’s biggest hits – although they’re less danceable and more “laid-back” – are “Strawberries” by Achille Lauro and Rose Villain and “Crazy music” by Marco Mengoni and Elodie (This track features on the album *Materia (Prisma)* by the singer from Ronciglione, who, following the success of *Due vite*, has embarked on this summer collaboration with Elodie, known for her catchy hits from previous years (remember, exactly a year ago, “Tribale”?).

And as for hip hop, let’s mention three tracks that are in high demand, particularly amongst younger audiences (there hasn’t been a single 18th birthday party in recent months where we haven’t played them to great acclaim: one in particular, “Black windows” by Ava, Anna and Capo Plaza; but also “Taxi on the Moon” (Produced by Takagi & Ketra), performed by Tony Effe and Emma. It’s not quite as “upbeat” but it’s been a big hit on the radio “Lightning conductors” by Ernia, Fabri Fibra and Bresh; “Parafulmini” is a catchy rap hit born out of a collaboration between three acclaimed artists (Ernia, Fabri Fibra and Bresh) which criticises the excessive use of social media and the tendency to judge people based on their social success (do watch the video, which pays homage to Quentin Tarantino’s film “Reservoir Dogs”).

Summer 2023 Songs: when Italian music meets dance music

But let’s really start to pick up the pace with two tracks: one is already a “well-established hit”, whilst the other is a hit that’s likely to take off in the next few days (though it’s already doing very well!).

It belongs to the first description “Another world” by Merk & Kremont with Tananai e Marracash: this collaboration between two highly talented (and thoroughly Italian) dance producers and two of the most popular singers of the moment has produced a track with a truly remarkable “drive” – it’s very fast-paced and creates an atmosphere reminiscent of Underworld’s famous ‘Born Slippy’.

Staying on the subject of references to other famous works, “I Cry in the Nightclub” by Mara Sattei It undoubtedly brings to mind Alexandra Stan’s “Mr. Saxobeat’, but it still has its own character. It’s arrived well into the summer, so it has less time to challenge the established hits; nevertheless, it’s not hard to predict that this track will make a big splash in the second half of August and throughout September… with a bang.

Current international dance tracks

Since we’re always talking about dance music, how could we not consider David Guetta? The French DJ has covered the hugely popular 90s track ’What Is Love” by Haddaway in his “Baby Don’t Hurt Me“, in collaboration with Anne-Marie and Coi Leray. It’s the perfect track to kick off the retro vibe at your parties. They’ve also sampled “I’m a Scatman”, Scatman John’s 90s hit, the Black Eyed Peas, which confirm the slightly Latin-inspired shift of recent years with the new single taken from the album *Elevation*: ’Dancing with You“.

There’s also a touch of “Latin style” to “Caribbean” by Baddies Only, but the tracks are more club-oriented: perfect for a great night out dancing. It’s not exactly brand new, but it still gets the dancefloors packed, “Substitution”, in which you will have recognised the sample from Alphaville’s “Big in Japan” (a memorable track from the 1980s), was the result of a collaboration between two outstanding artists such as Purple Disco Machine and DJ Kung, appearing together for the first time, are set to make their mark on the international club scene thanks to a catchy beat that makes this a dance track you just have to dance to.

E Dua Lipa? We haven’t forgotten! “Dance the Night Away” is a track that brings the spirit of the 1970s back to life with its references to and influences from that era. The fact that it was included on the soundtrack of the film Barbie This is testament to its popularity and its impact in the media. It’s certainly a fun track, perfect for getting guests dancing in style, and it’s also a favourite with the very young.

“(It Goes Like) Nanana” by Peggy Gou It’s another track that’s perfect for a “stylish” party, with its slightly 90s-style house sounds: it’s classy yet catchy at the same time.

As for the reggaeton, there aren’t many tracks that have gone mainstream; Rosalia with “Tuya“, however, has really managed to make this upbeat track a hit across the board; whilst it doesn’t get you dancing quite like the most popular reggaeton hits of yesteryear (such as “Gasolina”), it’s great for getting the party started: it works!
