MTV Europe Music Awards: a few ideas for your parties, straight from the 2020 EMAs

Once again this year, we couldn’t help but take notice of one of the world’s most important music events, namely the MTV Europe Music Awards, which, as always, take place a few months after the Video Music Awards (we’ve talked about them HERE). This is the 26th edition (!) (the last time it was held was EMA were hosted in Italy (the last one took place in Milan in 2015). But returning to the present day, here’s what I liked most about the event which, as is traditional, brought together artists from the scene, although this time only “virtually”: the event was streamed from London.

Let’s start with the award that’s closest to our world: the Best Electronic, which went to the DJ David Guetta, “fresh”, incidentally, from the most coveted accolade of all DJs worldwide: on Saturday 7 November, he was announced as number one in the famous DJ Mag Top 100 (watch the video of that epic evening below). In short, for the 53-year-old Frenchman, 2020 has inevitably been a quiet year in terms of live performances, but he has more than made up for it with the titles he’s won… and the huge number of views his videos have racked up. Just think that one of his hits that We love playing even more in your festivals and events (the much-danced-to Play Hard: Here it is) has surpassed one billion views.

But let’s keep up the momentum and talk about the great victory for Lady Gaga in the category Best Artist (though Lady Germanotta had racked up no fewer than seven nominations). Her ‘911’ is still keeping us company, and we really let our hair down to it… until the nightclubs closed again.

Another song that’s often danced to, although in this case the rhythms are reggaeton, is Tusa by Karol G (Carolina Giraldo Navarro, a Colombian singer) who triumphed in the coveted categories Best Latin e Best Collaboration thanks to her duet with Nicki Minaj.

This account of the evening wouldn’t be complete without mentioning a few incredible performances, including Doja Cat (won the prize Best New) who performed a truly compelling rock version of “Say So” in a setting that was a cross between dark and “bucolic” (a lawn in a dimly lit concert hall).

Another notable performance was that of the Little Mix, who, as well as hosting the evening, danced and sang “Sweet Melody”, performing a flawless choreographed routine set against the backdrop of a unique postmodern pyramid. At this 2020 edition of the EMAs, they took home the award for Best Pop and Best UK & Ireland Act.

Finally, how could we fail to mention the BTS, the Korean group that is now famous in Europe too, including Italy? As well as having won the award Best Song For Dynamite, they literally “swept the board” that evening, winning awards such as Best Group, Best Virtual Live and Biggest Fans.
