As early as 2020, vinyl sales had overtaken CD sales in the United States; now, the same is true in Italy: the good old disc, after 30 years, returns to to surpass the compact disc (a digital format launched in 1982 following an agreement between Philips and Sony). The (welcome, for us) news comes from the official source for music in our country, FIMI, the trade association representing the leading record labels: in the first quarter of 2021, for the first time since 1991, LPs generated higher turnover than CDs, and by a considerable margin: vinyl generated sales of 4.7 million units, compared with 4.4 million for its digital “cousin”.

The rate of growth is particularly striking: Vinyl sales have risen by 121% compared with the same period in 2020 (CD sales have stagnated, falling by 6%). To date, therefore, sales of the good old “black disc” account for 11% of the domestic music market, in a scene which, let’s not forget, is still dominated by the streaming, with the’80% of total turnover. It is worth noting that this sector, too, recorded a 37 per cent increase: in other words, vinyl has boomed, but not at the expense of streaming, which is now to be regarded as the real rival to analogue formats, given that the CD – barring a nostalgia revival (perhaps in a few years’ time…) – is set to become increasingly marginal in the near future.
