If I say “senior citizens” party’, what springs to mind? Your thoughts probably turn straight to Frank Sinatra, 1960s group dances or, worse still, a set list of slow, slightly melancholic tunes.

But let’s stop for a moment. Here at DJ4, we’re professional DJs, and we know that the key to our work is empathy – and empathy comes through mathematics.

Today I want to talk to you about how the “senior” audience is changing and why it’s not enough to just offer the usual evergreen Dusty ones – that’s an unforgivable mistake. One we won’t make, but which many people still do.

Let’s do some quick calculations. We’re in the 2026. If you have an audience of 75-year-olds in front of you today, it means they were born around 1951.

This changes everything. It means that:

• In the 1969, the year of Woodstock, they were 18. They were flower children, not people nostalgic for big bands.

• In the 1976, the year of *Saturday Night Fever*, they were 25. They were at the height of their social lives and were frequenting the first nightclubs.

• In the the 1980s, they were thirty-somethings in the middle of their careers who listened to Pink Floyd, Duran Duran or the Eurythmics in their cars.

That distinguished lady with silver hair you see sitting in the front row was, in all likelihood, a wild party animal in her twenties, dancing to disco music. Treating her as though she’d only ever lived in the black-and-white era is a misjudgement that puts a damper on the party.

Beyond the usual clichés: what to play?

I’m not saying we should do away with the great Italian or international classics altogether, but rather that we should develop the selection. Here’s what you should focus on:

1. Yacht Rock and sophisticated pop: There’s a whole genre of music produced to perfection between the late 1970s and the early 1980s (think of Steely Dan, Michael McDonald, but also Italy’s own Alan Sorrenti or the more electronic side of Matia Bazar) that resonates perfectly with their youth.

2. The Hot Disco: YMCA. Of course, but above all the Bee Gees, Donna Summer and Chic. It’s music that makes you want to move, and it’s remained in their DNA.

3. The energy of the 1980s: Many older people today were active adults during the 1980s. A track by Phil Collins or Elton John can have a much stronger emotional impact than an old ballad from the 1950s or 1960s.

We often make the mistake of thinking that our musical tastes are set in stone by the time we’re twenty. That’s not the case.

Many of our older listeners have carried on listening to the radio; they experienced the Eurodance craze of the 1990s with their children, and these days they might even find themselves humming along to the latest hit they hear on TikTok whilst playing with their grandchildren.

The aim of a DJ in these settings is not to provide “nursing home-style entertainment”, but to get the audience into the spirit of things still alive and connected. Music should be a bridge to their best energy, not a reminder of the passing of time.

Don’t just look at the colour of their hair. Look at the energy in their eyes. Give it a go – play a Queen track or a Daft Punk classic and watch their reaction. You’ll be amazed at how many “oldies” are ready to give you a lesson in style on the dance floor.
